John Smoltz will compete in a 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier next week.
That's right -- the PGA event. Smoltz, 42, is a -2 handicap on the golf course and shot consecutive rounds of 65 this year at a course in Kennesaw, Georgia. "I'm pretty realistic," Smoltz told MLB.com's Mark Bowan on Monday. "Even if I set forth a month's worth of practice, my realistic chance of qualifying isn't great. I just want to do it for the experience." He's currently working for MLB Network and is doubtful to return to a big league mound.
