The College Baseball Foundation will celebrate a milestone in the history of college baseball during its annual festivities July 1 through July 4 in Lubbock.

“Celebrating 150 Years of College Baseball” will be the theme of this year’s CBF events, which will feature the first College Baseball Awards Show and the fourth induction ceremony for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The theme celebrates the anniversary of the first college baseball game between Amherst College and Williams College in 1859 in Pittsfield, Mass.

“This is a significant milestone in the history of this great game,” said Sam Medina, chairman of the CBF Board of Trustees. “Honoring this anniversary is a natural for this organization. The CBF is dedicated to preserving the history of college baseball and what better way to do that than to recognize this anniversary throughout our events.”

The festivities begin with the College Baseball Awards Show on July 2 at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. This event will feature the presentation of the Dick Howser Trophy to the national player of the year. Other awards scheduled to be presented during the show include the Brooks Wallace Award, honoring the nation’s best shortstop, and the Pitcher of the Year Award.

The College Baseball Awards Show is the result of collaboration between the CBF, the Dick Howser Trophy Committee and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers association.

“We’re very excited about the College Baseball Awards Show and banquet,” said Raymond Richardson, awards show chairman and CBF Trustee. “To have so many college baseball awards presented in one night is a great milestone for the game.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the awards show banquet are now on sale for $30 for CBF members and $35 for non-members. Tickets for children age 12 and under are $20. For ticket information, call Landon Holly at (806) 787-1680 or Raymond Richardson at (806) 786-6338 or email membership@collegebaseballfoundation.org.

The 2009 class of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame takes center stage on July 3. The day will begin at 10:30 a.m. with United Grand Slam Showcase at City Bank, 5219 City Bank Parkway. This event features a ring presentation followed by an autograph session.
The official induction ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. Free tickets are available at all Lubbock United Supermarket locations or by emailing membership@collegebaseballfoundation.org.

The members of the 2009 Hall of Fame Class are Joe Carter and Darren Dreifort, both from Wichita State, Kirk Dressendorfer and Keith Moreland, both from Texas, Gordie Gillespie of Lewis College/St. Francis, Barry Larkin from Michigan, Rafael Palmeiro and Ron Polk, both from Mississippi State, Branch Rickey from Ohio Wesleyan and Michigan, and Todd Walker from LSU.

“This is an amazing Hall of Fame class,” said Jeff Chase, Hall of Fame co-chair. “In addition to being significant names in college baseball several of these men are also well known for their professional careers. We’re looking forward to their speeches and hearing what the game of college baseball meant to them.”

The schedule of events concludes on July 4 with the annual 4th on Broadway Parade followed by the CBF Fan Fest at 10:30 a.m. During Fan Fest, the public will have a chance to get autographs from members of this year’s Hall of Fame class as well as participate in a variety of activities including a wiffle-ball home run derby.

“Fan Fest provides a great chance for the public to interact with the Hall of Fame inductees,” said Mike Gustafson, Hall of Fame co-chair. “It’s a neat time for people to meet players they watched, whether in college baseball or the pros. And it’s great time to our inductees to just have some fun. It’s always a lot of fun to see our inductees having such a great time during the street fair.”

Sponsorship opportunities also are now available for this year’s events. For more information, contact Jeff Chase at jeff@collegebaseballfoundation.org or (806) 777-8277. For more information on the schedule for this year’s CBF events, contact Mike Gustafson at gus@collegebaseballfoundation.org.
