"Wilmington, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks are pleased to announce that, as part of the 2007 promotional schedule, Royals Hall of Fame third baseman and current Vice President of Baseball Operations George Brett will be making a personal visit to Frawley Stadium on August 21. In addition, the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a special George Brett bobblehead doll. “The Wilmington Blue Rocks organization is privileged and honored that Hall of Famer George Brett will be appearing at Frawley Stadium this summer,†said Blue Rocks general manager Chris Kemple. “It’s been a number of years since he’s been here. We look forward to his return.†More details on Brett’s appearance are forthcoming.
Brett’s visit highlights the re-affiliation of the Blue Rocks with the Kansas City organization. Beginning with their inaugural 1993 season, the Blue Rocks were a member of the Royals farm system. The team then joined the Boston Red Sox organization for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, before re-entering the Kansas City sphere this off-season.
No other player in Kansas City Royals history is more synonymous with the organization than George Brett. The younger brother of former big league pitcher Ken Brett, George’s professional baseball career began in 1971 when he was drafted out of high school in the second round of the amateur draft by the Kansas City Royals. He made his Major League debut in 1973 and would go on to spend all 21 years of his illustrious career in a Royals uniform.
Along the way, Brett would notch 13 American League All-Star appearances, three A.L. batting titles, a Gold Glove (1985), and an A.L. Most Valuable Player award (1980). His career batting average of .305 and his 317 home runs are Royals records, while his 3,154 hits are the most by any third baseman in big league history. Brett also became the first player in baseball history to amass 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, 600 doubles, 100 triples, 1,500 RBI and 200 stolen bases. He was an integral cog on both the 1980 American League pennant winners and the 1985 Royals squad that captured the first and only World Series title in Kansas City history.
The West Virginia native retired in 1993 and, not long afterwards, Cooperstown came calling, as Brett was enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. The Royals retired Brett’s number 5 and inducted him into the team’s Hall of Fame in 1994.
After his playing days concluded, Brett joined the Kansas City front office and has been the Royals Vice President of Baseball Operations for the past 13 years. He has been a part of many charity events over the years, including Greater Kansas City Day, which raises money for the Rotary Youth Camp in the Kansas City area. Brett, along with his brothers, owns Brett Brothers Sports International, which manufactures bats, gloves and other baseball equipment. Brett and his wife Leslie have three sons: Jackson, Dylan, and Robin.
The Blue Rocks launch their 2007 Carolina League campaign in Myrtle Beach with a 7:05 p.m. affair against the Pelicans on Thursday, April 5. That begins a string of eight-straight road contests for the Rocks, culminating in a four-game set in Kinston. The team returns to Wilmington for its home opener on Friday, April 13, as the Salem Avalanche invade Frawley Stadium for a 7:05 p.m. tilt. Single-game tickets and ticket packages are on sale now. To order, call 302-888-BLUE; log on to www.bluerocks.com; or visit the Frawley Stadium ticket window Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday (March only) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m."
