Express Honors UT and A&M Coaching Greats
Area High School, College and Pro Players Also to be Recognized
Former Astros Manager and Pitcher Larry Dierker to Serve as Featured Speaker
(ROUND ROCK, TX) – The Round Rock Express, in conjunction with the Round Rock Sertoma Club, will host the Sixth Annual Express Winter Baseball Banquet on January 28th in the United Heritage Center, located at the Dell Diamond. The event will begin with a social hour at 6:00 PM. Former Houston Astros great Larry Dierker will be the featured speaker.
Dierker debuted with the Houston Colt .45’s on his eighteenth birthday and went on to pitch fourteen years in the Major Leagues, thirteen of them in Houston. He finished with a record of 139-123 and was twice named to the All-Star team in 1969 and 1971. He later went on to manage the Astros for five years from 1997 to 2001. He led the Astros to the playoffs four out of five years and was named National League Manager of the Year in 1998.
Dierker has served as the Houston Astros principal color analyst on radio and television for 18 years and has authored a book, “This Ain’t Brain Surgery: How to Win the Pennant Without Losing Your Mind†in 2003.
“We are excited about having Larry Dierker speak at this year’s banquet. I have heard him speak at functions in the past and he does an amazing job. It will be quite a treat for our high school awardees to hear about Larry’s baseball experiences,†stated Express President Jay Miller.
The Express, with the consultation of area high school coaches, will recognize a pre-season All-Star high school team. Past high school winners include such notables as Huston Street (Westlake High School), John Danks (Round Rock High School) and Greg Golson (Connally High School).
“One of the exciting things about the annual baseball banquet is recognizing these outstanding high school players and then having the opportunity to watch their careers progress. Huston Street is a prime example; he was first honored as a high school player in 2001 and then he went on to star at The University of Texas. Now at the professional ranks, we are once again honoring his accomplishments and are very proud of him being named AL Rookie of the Year,†added Jay Miller.
The 2005 National Champion Texas Longhorns will be well represented in this year’s banquet. Coach Augie Garrido, Seth Johnston, J.Brent Cox and Adrian Alaniz will be on hand to pick up awards.
Former Texas A&M head coach Mark Johnson was selected as this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Johnson served 21 years as the Head Coach of the Texas Aggies from 1985-2005 amassing a record of 876-433-3. Johnson led the Aggies to the NCAA playoffs on 13 occasions and nine times reached the Sweet 16. Texas A&M appeared in the College World Series in 1993 and 1999. The Aggies won the Big 12 Conference regular-season crown in 1998 and 1999 and won the Southwest Conference championship three times (1986, 1989, and 1993) during his tenure.
