Private Signing Protocol?

Exactly, the promoter has already received what they paid for. At that point, it's up to the athlete whether or not he'll do a freebie. I remember getting Enos Slaughter after a signing he did, and when we walked up to him he smiled and said "You guys are smart!" Of course, Enos was a class act and a great signer. So in my opinion it really has more to do with the athlete's signing habits and willingness to sign for free (under any circumstance), than it does the promoter's control over the athlete's actions.

Seriously, what's the difference between asking a guy 5 minutes after a signing, or a day after, or a week? What is the time frame after a signing that a collector can ask for a free autograph? If you pay a guy to sign X items and he signs them, why should it matter to the promoter or the athlete? It's not like anyone's "losing" any money, because obviously the collector isn't willing to pay the fee in the first place.

This is wrong on so many levels. The promoter is paying the way for the player to be there. Basically the player is working for the promoter. Would you go and ask for free ice cream from the kid who is selling ice cream on the corner? Guys who do this and wait outside shows are what give a lot of collectors bad names.

It always ticks me off when I see someone try to get a freebie from a guy at a public signing, so I don't guess I would feel any different if it happened at a private signing. Have a little dignity and respect for collectors who paid their hard earned money and at least wait til the person is off the property of the place they just signed at. I don't have a problem with someone getting Koufax for free after a signing as long as its not in the same place of the signing.

I think this is wrong on all levels. If you want the guys autograph, then pay for it. Don't wait for him outside a place where other people are paying for the same autograph that you want. If you run into him at the grocery store, etc., then yes I think its fine. To hit him up before or after a private signing to me is completely wrong and acts like this are what gives collectors a bad name. Just my 2 cents....

I agree with everyone who says it's wrong to stalk to a guy following a private signing. I get players at games, practice, paid signings and free signings. Anything beyond that, I'll pass. I grew up in Kansas City, and my idol was Bo Jackson. When I was 8 years old, I was at the grocery store with my mom, and sure enough, Bo was there shopping. I wanted to have him sign something for me, but my mom said, no, that he was on his personal time. They're just people, and while I love collecting, there are many lines I won't cross, and the lesson was learned that day in the grocery store. Those who do cross the line, are the ones that annoy players making them less likely to sign at games and practices.

I don't need anyone's signature that badly that I'll stalk a player simply because I know where he'll be a given time.
