Turned out better than I thought it was going to. I went into this year's Phestival needing Utley to finish a World Series card set and Howard on our WS Bat. I had an Utley ticket but traded for Howard so it's the last Phestival I will have to pull out the WS bat for. Ended up getting a couple more Howard's, Rollins, a bunch of MLB debut ticket stubs (Mayberry, Aumont, Galvis and Pettibone), found Dave Montgomery for my next to last 08 WS ball (still need a Harry Kalas....). Never did get Utley...though - except a nice autographed hat with the camo "P" in a grab bag
Highlight of the night was my son asking to get Frandsen on a ball with an inscription for friends of ours. Our friends' 6-year-old son died a couple years ago. Kevin's birthday is April 6th. This year on the 4/6 the Phillies went extra innings and Frandsen hit a walk-off double. Facebook and text messages among all our friends went "viral" with messages claiming our Kevin from Heaven was behind that double. My son told Kevin Frandsen the story and he wrote them a great inscription when he signed the ball. If you are at the game tomorrow night (Friday 5/17) you will see over 1,300 of us wearing out Keep the Phaith gear. This is the 3rd year that The Kevin From Heaven Foundation sponsored "A Night at the Ballpark" and the crowd goes each year. We started out with 600 people the first year. Over 800 last year and over 1,300 this year.
And a neat Howard item we got signed tonight - canvas print of an Upper Deck Masterpieces card:

The day started off in Baltimore with a Magerk's cheesesteak, as any road trip to Philly should. My friends and I arrived at CBP around 2:00, and the line was smaller than I expected at that time. I learned lessons from past years, and brought sufficient drinks and chairs this time. I had 16 total tickets this year - 13 different booths and 3 dupes. Checked out the list as we arrived - slightly underwhelmed, but again I've learned that trading and cash lines can always get you better results and this year, with help for the first time, I was going for quantity. And Ryan Howard.
In the end, I was able to essentially trade a Dom Brown and Chase Utley for two Howards (win!), and get Michael Young and Papelbon in cash lines. My friend, a Sox fan, also got Papelbon on a 2007 SI 11x14 with '2007 Champs!' inscription. And got to meet Red33Sox in the Howard line, which was very cool!!! Here's my results....
Larry Anderson, Gary Matthews, Kevin Frandsen
Kyle Kendrick, Justin De Fratus, Erik Kratz
Jeremy Horst, Delmon Young, Jonathan Pettibone
Phillippe Aumont, Chad Durbin (w/ inscription), Freddy Galvis
Charlie Manuel 08 WS ball, Ryne Sandberg HOF ball w/ inscript
Michael Young 09 AS ball, Jonathan Papelbon 12 AS ball
Ryan Howard 08 WS ball
Carlos Ruiz 11x14 SI
Ryan Howard 11x14 (photo does not really show how great this one came)
And three grab bags, which I'm never disappointed in. Pulled a 2012 Highlight DVD (were there highlights from 2012???), a signed John Mayberry hat, SGA Rollins mini Gold Glove, shirt, and SGA winter hat
Had a great time at the event, as it was my third year going, and every year I look forward to the event. In my opinion, it is just great to see so many die hard fans rooting for their team, but also raising money for ALS. Three years ago, I was not a Phillies fan. I live in CT and love my Sox. However, after seeing what the Phillies do for ALS, for their fans, and for the ALS patients at this event, I have become a fan of the Phils. A little bit of background, my uncle died of ALS about 3 1/2 years ago, and if you have seen ALS in person, it is the most disgusting disease out there. I really like how the Phillies and ALL their players really commit to this event. They raised 900,000 dollars yesterday for ALS research. Too awesome.
After a 5 hour trip to get to the stadium, I sat in line with my brother and waited to trade. We were the only guys with Red Sox hats. Did you see us? I got Hamels, M. Young, D. Young, Adams, and Rollins. I met a couple of guys in line who took my M.Young for a Howard. I gave someone by Hamels for a Papelbon. Someone wanted Howard so bad they offered me a Rollins, M.Young and Sandberg ticket for my Howard so I took them up on that offer. I then went on the run to trade so I could get a Howard back. I gave my Rollins and Sandberg for a Howard. I then traded by M. Young to my brother for another Papelbon.
So, in the end, I had D. Young, 2 Pap, Howard and Rollins tickets. I started at the Howard line, and to my suprise, things moved quickly. Howard was very nice. I then moved on to the Papelbon line, but he signed very slow. I ended up waiting in his line for about 30 mins, but I also had two items from Fenway that I needed signed, and I still miss him in Boston, so it was worth the wait. Pap inscribed both and I ended up getting a pic with Pap as well, and we got to talk for a couple of minutes. Awesome. I then moved on to the Rollins line, and was one away when I cut pushed out of the way by a big, large, green Phanatic. He kind of scared me. Jimmy was very pleasant and looked like he was enjoying himself.
I must have misjudged the time, so I went to the Hamels line and waited too long in the cash line. I was 8th in the line, and by the time they actually took donations, I paid $20 for two Hamels autos. Not bad. I then saw Dom. Brown sitting all by himself, and a nice sponsor had an extra Brown ticket, so I was able to get Brown on a ROMLB. decent! My brother ended up getting me D. Young on a card, so thats a bonus.
For the autos, I think I could have done a bit better if I hadnt spent so much time in the Pap line and waiting for the cash line with Hamels, but I am not gonna complain.
I also bought four grab bags. They usually sell out quickly, but this year, they were still trying to sell them as I left at 7pm.
I got a Bastardo auto'd ball in black
Gary Matthews ball in black
Papelbon in black
someone else i forgot in blue
I then asked a guy if he wanted to sell me a bobblehead, as I saw that he bought about 25 grab bags (why?)
He sold me a Manuel bobble
As I was walking out, I asked the Phestival workers if I could trade my Matthews for another bobble. The guy hesitated but let me do it and I pulled out the announcers bobble. I'll take it!
When I met up with my brother, he was happy getting 2 M. Youngs and 2 Adams. He then played the "every roll is a winner" and pulled a sweet game used ball hit by Utley and pitched by Shields.
Being a Sox fan, I get to see this event in a different light, but I also get to meet a lot of cool people. I was talking to one guy in line and after about 10 minutes of sharing stories, the guy I am talking to is none other than board member 2008WFCs! Pretty cool guy and I was glad to have met him.
I was waiting in line for Rollins cash donations when the phanatic came over. Rollins ticket line was moving so god damn slow then that slowed it down even more. They did not start taking cash for Rollins until 6:17. He was the last sig I needed for the day, and I waited there from 5:30 on. When I asked him if he could inscribe MVP "07 his handler almost yelled at me. Then Jimmy says "I signed #11". I thanked him. He has a really nice graph.
