I was out of there by 4 but it you could tell that Butkus, Bench, and Aparicio all sold well. Luis's situation was rather odd. He left at 3:25 (scheduled to end at 3:30). He sold over 400 tickets, but some people had to get refunds if they didn't come up for a last call. I was very disappointed with the dealer turnout, lower than even the last 2 Sun-Times shows which is odd given that they seemed to really want to hype this show up. Sign of the economy I guess. I'm floored that Yount sold out. Must be a Milwaukee invasion Sunday. I look forward to reports on how Russell, Manning, and Ripken sold as they are huge stars but also expensive
There are not as many dealer tables as at a typical Sun Times show, but it is spread out a bit more for this one.
The auto area was/is a madhouse as usual. First of all, where do the get the volunteers/number callers, etc? The guy said up to 25 for Mel Renfro for over 30 minutes on Friday. I also love how everyone getting someone crowds around the one entrance. I give props to TriStar for their entrance/exit procedures, as they had them at the National last year. It definitely alleviates the crowded mess, and you exit and enter at different points. What a novel idea?!
It seems the deluxe VIPs sold well as did the regular ones. The VIP twist this time around is that the Deluxe VIPers go first for guests, including the unlimited guys (Azumah, Morrissey & Squires). At a Sun Times show, if you are VIP, Deluxe or Regular, you just get in those lines.
Here's my wishlist for the November show:
Reggie Jackson
George Brett
Tony Dorsett
Ronnie Lott
November is also the only offseason show for active baseball players and they have brought in Peavy, Hanley Ramirez, and Evan Longoria the last 2 years. Hopefully they are able to bring in a similar high profile national baseball figure this year too. Think along the lines of a Roy Halladay
went today. got there at 9:30, show opening. no lines, no traffic on river road, never seen it like that before. bought my ticket for yount #109, gaylord perry #90. peyton manning they called up to 250. willie mays was still on 25 when i left the show at 2:15. i saw some nice ones, but also saw some awful ones. one guys singled signed bat was signed below the sweet spot, straight across the louisville slugger writing. he didnt think mays could see, because handlers were holding and adjusting the pieces as he signed them. i also saw this when i was in the line next to his. the packers did not seem to have much of a line. bill russell was finished in a short time.
my wantlist for november- wade boggs, nolan ryan, fred lynn, randy johnson, albert belle
The number callers for the show are ex cops and firefighters at first. I do not know who they are now as some of them have changed. I know the guy Ken is a football coach in the Overland Park area. He was the one who told me Yount sold out but he obviously did not
I would want to see the following at November Show : Bobby Doerr, Carl Yazstremski, Randy Johnson, Tony Gwynn, Brett Hull
Yaz is tough, doesn't he only do an annual Dick Gordon appearance? Not sure, I vaguely recall him doing a Bud's Sports signing too. He's had recent health problems so I don't know if he's interested in travel. He'd sell well though that's for sure. Also, if I'm not mistaken Doerr isn't traveling but someone else will have to confirm that
Yeah that is why its a wish list hahahah. Dick Gordon talked to me for a while at a show over a year ago and told me that Yaz only travels for fishing and drinking with old teammates. Told me a great story about the all star game at Boston.
I just really need Doerr and Yaz on one of my HOF Bats. I know I need to take it back to the east coast to get Yaz, Doerr, and Berra
