I kinda see where you're coming from, but it is only a buck...if he was getting $5-10 per auto your point would be more valid. A TTM request is 82 cents minimum, I'm OK personally with spending the extra 18 cents for a sure thing instead of rolling the dice with a TTM request.
Besides, plenty of guys do shows or signings and are still prolific TTM and/or IP signers. I don't think, majority of the time, that getting paid every once in a while ruins a guy's outlook on signing for free. JMHO.
I hear ya...but 82 cents might get me 8 to 10 cards signed.
Its not really about the money...I am not rich but I am certainly not poor. I guess I just feel like we (collectively) are contributing to the problem and not the solution...18 year old are already tough in A ball and the other guys are paranoid about ebay.
We have just had a rash of "private signings" recently. Ricky Williams and Drew Henson, to me are ok...because they have not been good signers historically. And if you need them to finish a set - then you can pay if you wish. But Vince Faison, Matt Rogelstad, etc?
True....or....82 cents could get you nothing. Or get you 8-10 cards signed in a dried up green ball point pen. TTM is just too unpredictable.
Believe me, I understand what you're saying, but in cases of Faison, Kavourias, guys like that...they themselves are probably still surprised they were able to pull off a paid signing. I don't think it would become their expectation. My guess is that if you sent off to Kavourias TTM you'd probably get him back, whether he does paid signings or not. I just don't think one-time small deal signings corrupt players as badly as shady agents, ebay and exclusive Tristar contracts.
One man's Ricky Williams is another man's Vince Faison. If I could find Jim Winn at a show/signing I'd be one happy camper, and 1/2 the people on this board probably never heard of him!
Do You Mean The "toy Cannon" Wynn Who Played For The Astros?
Good points. You are right about your Williams/Faison comp. I just traveled 40 miles to get one card signed by a guy in the 91 Eugene set.
Thanks for the opportunity to discuss this - typically these types of discussions turn in to "I hate you" or whatever when a 16 year old fans the flames. I just dont want to make the hobby any harder than it should be. As many of the older guys on this board will tell you - it wasnt always this hard. The hard part was finding a card shop that would sell singles of 87 topps or whatever so I could head to the yard and get Jim Acker, Lonnie Smith, Dwight Lowry, John Rabb, etc.
Now you have punk kids that will never play in AA lecturing me about how I am going to run off and sell their autograph on ebay. This hobby is like the mob....you try to get out....and it pulls you right back in.....it happens every spring.
