Tristar Houston Show Jan 19-21 2007

I wish they would send guys like Deion Sanders and AL Kaline to the New England shows. You guys are lucky. Tri Star seems to think that a major market like Boston doesn't want those guys, only guys like Mark Loretta,
Rich Gedman, and Bob Stanley. They are a joke and won't go to that show anymore. It seems like every city except Boston gets the superstars.
Even K.C. which is a small market gets Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young
and Jerry Rice. Tri-Star thinks Boston fans are a bunch of idiots and Rich Gedman will make us happy.. Please!

Tri-Star is done with Marlborough. I overheard a big time dealer there, (The lady who usually has singles from every set imaginable), and she said they aren't doing it this year and by the way they hear it will run in NJ/NY, they will move the Eastern Regional show to there.

I am content w/ a local show. They usually have a decent guest like a
JO JO White or Gerry Cheevers for like $10-$15 and can pick up supplies their
cheap money. Tri-Star can say in New York for all I care!

I have received a couple of inquiries concerning this show. Yes I am going however, I will be unable to obtain the free autos for anyone else except myself, usually they are 1 per person.

Tri Star NY vs New England

First off before anyone says I don't know what I am talking about let me give my qualifications.

I lived in NJ until I was 12 then moved to MA for 6 years. Graduated from Milford MA High School in 1989.

My first job was at our local Card Shop in Milford. After leaving there I sold cards at the Grafton Flea Market and Local MA Shows in Reading and North Attleboro.

I currently live in NJ but my current sales job brings me to Mass about 8-10 weeks a year and ironically I am in Franklin Ma as we speak.

Now with that said I agree with Tri Star moving the Eastern Regional Show to the NY Metro Area. I say this for a few reasons.

First the NE market is very finicky. It is a very all or nothing deal. When the Sox and Pats won stuff was uber hot. Anything with a pair of Red Sox on it sold. I was at stores where people were buying in bulk. But it is all Red Sox. I was at shows with huge lines for Rico Petrocelli. I used to love my trips back to NJ as a kid because I could buy Tony C and Dwight Evans Rookies for a buck or two and make 1000 to 2000% profit. I personally believe 75% of these cards are in New England Collections. Basically NE goes as the Sox do. Another big factor is the Venue, Marlborough is too far from Boston or any major population base. It is stuck off Rt 495 in a very Suburban area.

The NY area is different. The Yanks and Mets are kings, no doubt. There is also a very strong market from people who have relocated to the NY Metro Area. Also there are 4 teams with history in NY. Another big factor is how close it is to other cities. Boston, Albany, Hartford, Philly, Baltimore and Washington are all within a reasonable driving distance.

With all that said, if the quality of the Tri Star shows does not improve next year then they might as well not bother. We have a few Very Strong Shows in Westchester, Reading (Ft Washington) and the MAB Shows. For Football there is the Triumph show in Somerset every year which basically gets every star you can think of. The show last weekend was in a great location (5 miles outside NYC) but was very weak. There was more area set up for Tri Star to do signings after the public Signing then there was for Sales.

The NY market can work, but they have to go BIG. I thought they were nuts not bringing Clemens to this show. That would have gotten some Buzz. They had no major NY guys there. You need a mix. Look at the MAB lineups. You get a mix and there is usually a strong theme which attracts people to do theme items.

Sorry for the long winded post, as I said, I am in a hotel room in MA :)

wanst winded at all.very well put.
i was there friday as well and i agree.this show had all the potential to
take over the ny area as the best show in town and they disapointed big time.i dont know if it was huge table fees or what.and the mix of palyers wasnt bad but i was missing that huge star.how many people actually bought a ticket for huston street.they definatly need to get more dealers on board.
the only cool thing about having the private signing area there was you could see it happen.tristar failed once in ny already and now it might just fail again.
